Before we had modern medicine, eastern cultures created their own ways of understanding the human body, how it worked, and how to keep it happy. In Chinese medicine, they use meridians, which have different points that reference different systems in the body. In ancient cultures in what is now India, they use the system of Chakras.
There are seven chakras, each representing a part of the body, an essential oil for chakra balancing, a colour, and a spiritual or psychological concept. Those who believe in chakras think that harmony comes to the body when all seven chakras are working together, in balance with each other. Disharmony happens when a chakra (or multiple) are blocked, overactive, or experiencing misalignment with the others.
Sometimes, rebalancing your chakras is as easy as doing a meditation where you focus on realigning them. Just like sometimes making that pain in your back go away is as easy as changing the way you sit. But other times, there is more involved work to do on a chakra, which is where essential oils for chakra balancing come in.
We'll go over which chakras are which, what is involved with each, and what oils to use to help bring them back to their best state, below.
The Seven Chakras
The chakra system is easy to remember if you learned the rainbow using ROYGBIV. Starting at the base of the spine, the chakras ascend to the top of the head in rainbow order. Each chakra is aligned along the spine, so that aligned chakras look like a glowing line of colour. The chakras are
- The Root Chakra (Red, Grounding, Perineum)
- The Sacral Chakra (Orange, Embodiment, Sacrum)
- The Solar Plexus Chakra (Orange, Confidence, Above the belly button)
- The Heart Chakra (Green, Love and Emotions, Middle of chest)
- The Throat Chakra (Blue, Self-expression, Throat)
- The Third Eye Chakra (Indigo, Creativity, Middle of forehead)
- The Crown Chakra (Violet, Spirituality, Top of head)
Each chakra also has a Sanskrit name, just like yoga poses do, but most people refer to them as listed above. Want to know where yours are at? You can find chakra quizzes online which can tell you how balanced or unbalanced your chakras are, which are blocked, or which are overactive.
The Root Chakra
Your root chakra, which is located at the very lowest point of your torso, where your legs split, is our connection to the earth and this physical reality. Many visualizations will have you picture it as the roots that are attaching you to the ground. It's a deep red colour, which pulses and glows when it's healthy.
Cedarwood is a great essential oil for this chakra. It is earthy - coming from a tree, so you can truly imagine your roots taking hold in the earth. Diffuse it and visualize a red pulsing light at the base of your torso. For a delicious mix, add in a few drops of sandalwood and some cinnamon.
The Sacral Chakra
Your sacral chakra, which is at the base of your tailbone, not far from your root chakra, is a confident orange colour. When healthy, it makes you feel that your head, your body, and your soul are all working together as one. It loves when you do things in your body like dancing, exercising, or anything that keeps you embodied in your human vessel.
This is a very feminine chakra, in terms of energy - all genders have it, so our Yin blend of essential oils will serve you well when you're balancing the sacral centre. If you prefer a single scent, any of our delicious citrus scents will have you feeling deeply embodied.
The Solar Plexus Chakra
Your yellow solar plexus chakra, located just a few centimetres up from your naval, is the home of your self-confidence and your feelings about yourself. It's your sense of personal power and motivation. This sunny, yellow centre is well-activated by big belly breaths and positive words about yourself.
In terms of essential oils for the solar plexus chakra, look for spicier scents, ones that make you feel bold. Our Happiness mix, the Yang mix, or humble but ever-useful Lavender oil will help you activate this yellow centre.
The Heart Chakra
Your green heart chakra is where you feel connected to yourself and others, in terms of emotions. Often those who bottle up their true feelings, will find they have blocked heart chakras. To activate and heal this beautiful heart centre, spend time feeling your emotions and connecting with others.
Our Magic Love blend can help you open your heart chakra to let others in, while our Harmony blend is perfect for the person who needs to feel through some emotions that have backed up.
The Throat Chakra
A beautiful blue, open throat chakra is found in the person who feels that they can express themselves clearly and safely. Many of us have some energy to work through in this space. Some practitioners believe that neck pain can be indicative of a blocked throat chakra.
To clear it, practice saying what you mean and what you want, in the privacy of your own home, while diffusing our Purify blend, along with Frankincense, for clarity on what those words are.
The Third Eye Chakra
This chakra is a beautiful indigo colour and is associated with our thoughts, not only everyday ones but our psychic abilities and clairvoyance, which practitioners of chakra healing believe everyone has some of. Happy third eye chakras can think clearly, come to decisions, and trust their intuition in all situations.
Diffusing our Meditation blend is a beautiful way to open this third eye, which is all-seeing.
The Crown Chakra
Finally, the violet crown chakra, which is often expressed as almost a spotlight coming out of the top of the head, houses our relationship with God, whatever that means to you. It connects us, literally, to a higher power, being at the highest point of the body.
Our Ecstasy blend, used along with the Meditation blend, is a great combination to diffuse while you focus on your spiritual self connecting to the heavens.
Essential Oils for Chakra Healing
Diffusing our oils, without intention, won't heal your chakras. The oils are tools you can (and should!) use to get in touch with each chakra, but you'll need to have the concentration and intention on clearing, or connecting with each energy centre to have the best results.
You can find hundreds of chakra meditations on Youtube, which we encourage you to do while using these essential oils for chakra clearing. You can shop for our high-quality, fair trade, organic essential oils, and our many types of diffusers on the Smellacloud website. Namaste!
